This mission is personal. As kids of Indian immigrants, we grew up balancing two worlds - embracing our culture at home while trying to blend in everywhere else. This business has become a healing way to stay rooted, and to invite others in.
Chechi means "older sister" in Malayalam - it's what Jess has called Joanna her whole life. In our culture, it's a title of respect, love, and hospitality. But we've watched many who grew up like us quietly set aside names and traditions like these, just to fit in.
Ironically, that's exactly what happened to chai. Somewhere along the way, it became a syrup, a flavor, a "chai tea latte" - something far from what it really is. We started Chechi's Chai to bring it back: for the South Asian kids looking for an accessible way home to their culture, and for anyone craving an authentic experience.
The world can feel divided but over a cup of well-loved chai, time slows down and suddenly, we're not strangers. We're family.
